Doi Chang Coffee

From Opium Fields to World- Class Arabica

Nestled in the misty highlands of Chiang Rai, Doi Chang has become synonymous with premium Arabica coffee from Thailand.
Once a region struggling with poverty and dependency on opium farming, Doi Chang underwent a remarkable transformation in the 1980s, thanks to a royal initiative by the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej.
This visionary project introduced sustainable crops, including coffee, to empower local communities and restore the land’s ecological balance.

What Makes Doi Chang Coffee Unique?

Doi Chang’s coffee-growing environment is nothing short of exceptional. Located 1,300 – 1,450 meters above sea level, the region’s cool climate, mineral-rich soil, and high-altitude microclimate provide the perfect conditions for growing world-class coffee.

Local farmers, primarily from the Akha Hill Tribe, have perfected the art of cultivating Arabica beans. They combine traditional farming methods passed down through generations with modern sustainable practices introduced during the royal initiative. This results in coffee that is as ethical as it is delicious.

  • Altitude Advantage: The cooler temperatures at higher altitudes slow the growth of coffee cherries, allowing them to develop more complex and nuanced flavors.

  • Shade-Grown Farming: Coffee is cultivated under the canopy of native trees, protecting the ecosystem while enhancing the beans’ natural sweetness.

  • Handpicked Quality: Every coffee cherry is carefully handpicked at peak ripeness, ensuring consistency and excellence in every cup.

A Taste of Thailand in Every Sip

Doi Chang coffee is renowned for its distinct flavor profile.
Expect a harmonious balance of caramel sweetness, dark chocolate richness, and citrusy brightness, with a smooth finish. These flavors reflect not only the unique terroir of the region but also the dedication and craftsmanship of the Akha farmers.

At Malee Coffee, we source our beans directly from Zoba Farm, one of the most celebrated farms in Doi Chang.
By working closely with local farmers, we ensure our coffee upholds the region’s heritage while meeting the highest quality standards.
